Most people who have gone on a handful of road trips know the common road snacks: Jerky, Trail Mix, Packaged Nuts, Candy Bars, Chips, Sodas, Gatorade, Meat Sticks and Cheese, and maybe the occasional Cliff Bar.
After a couple years of trying to find decent snacks at the gas station you start to wonder if there’s better options. I know that I was. After 10 years of motorcycle touring, these are my go to snacks for fueling me across multiple states, “beyond the gas station fare.”
Most of these can also be found at REI -which is how I restock on cross country trips. The GoMacro Bars and Bison Bars can be found at well stocked Grocery Stores.
Jelly Belly Extreme Sport Beans
Sport Beans have been very helpful for long days when I don't want to dump a Nuun Tablet into my water bottle so you still get electrolytes, they also have a version without caffeine
GoMacro MacroBar Organic Vegan Protein Bars
GoMacro Bars are by far my favorite protein bar because most of them aren't sickly sweet like cliff bars or luna bars so I don't feel sick to my stomach after I eat them the peanut butter flavor is my favorite but there's lots of flavors
PROBAR - Meal Bar
ProBars are ideal on those days when you’re crunching miles, and you don’t want to stop to have a full meal
EPIC Bison Bacon Cranberry Bars
For Meat I prefer Tanka Bars (they're bison and cranberry, but they seem to be sold out everywhere right now) but Epic Bison Bars are almost just as good and I feel less like I'm eating the ground up leftovers of a meat packing plant lol
Lenny & Larry's Complete Cookie
These are good mid-afternoon-I-have-100-miles-to-go-till-food Snacks. They are dense, not actually super sweet, and will power you though the last stretch.
Nuun Sport: Electrolyte Drink Tablets
I carry a small extra water bottle just to mix my Nuun Tablets in throughout the day. The flavors are pretty subtle, and drinking these is definitely cheaper than buying a bottle of Gatorade at every stop when it’s hot.
Honey Stinger Organic Honey Waffle
Honey Stinger waffles are a great boost of energy when you crave something sweet.
Home Boiled Eggs
One of my ultimate favorite road snacks are boiled eggs. They travel well, packed with protein, can be boiled at home, or boiled on the road -if you bring a camp stove- and are just the ultimate snack.
